We can’t have discussions at all without first agreeing on standards for truths like that we will use logic to determine the most accurate outcome. If we can’t rely on an unbiased third party to take away our unending struggle for dominance then the fight will forever continue and we will all struggle along with it. For example if we don’t know how to spell something instead of bickering we consult a dictionary which is an unbiased third party.

Truth is truth. And I like to think of it as a "meeting of minds" if people are not actually building shared understanding

Yeah it would seem obvious, but the reason for this video is because some people don't argue based on what's true, but rather what they want to be true

Scott Cunningham, maybe people dont have a way to tell what is true. And instead, they go with what "fits" into their existing model... what feels right

thelevel, that's exactly the issue. We have ways to tell what's true. If you argue over the spelling of a word, use a dictionary. If you argue about how gravity works, consult a physics textbook. There is no room for what feels right. That's called chaos. Feelings change by the second.

Scott Cunningham, fundamentally, you can see what doesn't match, and that can inform what you can know. Facts referenced may or may not be true. It may be true that a dictionary has a word definition. But what if a word definition is wrong? There needs to be a method for seeing what is black and white. And then the mind does well on it's own with the gray area.

thelevel, well if you're going to argue that the dictionary isn't as reliable as your intuition for spelling, then you will never have any concrete knowledge. Also what is a better source?

thelevel, what's the likelihood that the word in the dictionary is wrong compared to one person's ability to spell.

Scott Cunningham, I'm just pointing out that knowing something isnt the same as doing a Google search. Regarding words, they have meanings for sure. Otherwise logic wouldn't work. And a better source for knowing is mismatching. What doesn't match.

I keep closed captions on so I can watch vids at night while the family sleeps. The opening statement said "today I want to talk to you about..." But what I heard was "today I want to talk to you aboot" 🤣 I love my Canadian friends 👍

Often in discussions truth is irrelevant. Almost all opinions work that way. It's only when you try to prove your opinion, truth will be what you want.

Chrisp, morality over science then, don't get mixed up in the terminology.
